TATA GROUP, based in India, known for its excellent performance and commitment to sustainability, aims at enhancing the well-being of communities worldwide through trust-based leadership, driving their support for India's progress. With philanthropic trusts holding 66% of Tata Sons' equity share capital, the conglomerate has emerged as the most impactful philanthropic entity in the country, aiding in education, health, rural development, and environmental preservation.
48.5% of Tata Trust's funds are dedicated to the healthcare sector. Tata Memorial Centre, established in 1941, was the first to offer quality cancer care in India. They have taken healthcare initiatives by partnering with government, non-government, and other philanthropic organizations. For example, the MANSI program by Tata Steel Foundation provides in-person training to 'sahiyyas' on prenatal and postpartum care for mothers and children; The India Nutrition Initiative (TINI) by Tata Trusts is leading efforts to combat malnutrition in the country.
The group's main impact lies in the field of education, influenced by their founder Jamsetji Tata's conviction that a nation's development begins with the educational progress of its citizens. The central government prompted the Trust to develop a program for teachers to improve their experiential learning skills, in line with the National Education Policy 2020 and Tata's belief in the importance of quality education for empowerment. The Trust backed the Karta Initiative, ensuring access to high-quality education for underprivileged students in India and overseas. They also understand the importance of sports for children's holistic development. The Trust has established several sports initiatives in different states in partnership with their respective governments.
Tata contributed to developing rural areas, prioritizing water sanitation, livelihood, and skill development. The Trust aims to implement the "One Water" concept using a value chain strategy through lowering water and reforming water demand, restoring and recharging water availability, maintaining water delivery systems, and guaranteeing safe sanitation and waste management. The Rural Upliftment Portfolio of the Trust focuses on creating self-reliance by promoting productivity and innovation, assisting in the restoration of forest rights of approximately 5 million acres, strengthening the dairy sector, women-led community institutions along with artisan entrepreneurs. Tata STRIVE promotes entrepreneurship, focusing on women and transgenders.
To empower the environment, Tata set up the India Climate Collaborative dedicated to finding catalytic climate change solutions. They have partnered with the Centre for Social and Environmental Innovation, along with the Computer Science Lab at IIT Delhi to monitor inventions in water spheres across the world. Tata also built a Water diagnostic Toolkit to improve water quality in rural areas and launched the India Clean Air Connect to gather information about the air quality ecosystem.
